Torex Semiconductor Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan: President, Takeshi Kimura, TSE Prime: 6616) has received the “Electrical and Electronic Parts Award” at the Super Monodzukuri Parts Grand Award 2025, organized by the Monozukuri Nippon Conference and The Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, Ltd.

About the award-winning product: VIN=36V, IOUT=600mA, Built-in driver synchronous step-down DC/DC converter XC9704/XC9705 series

In industrial equipment, medical devices, communication systems, automotive equipment, and consumer electronics, the integration of sensors and communication modules for data collection continues to advance, while AI-driven technological innovation is accelerating. As a result, the development of electronic devices that incorporate sensors and communication modules, which were not traditionally required, has been expanding, leading to an overall increase in power consumption.

At the same time, electronic devices are often subject to strict size constraints, making it difficult to increase their physical dimensions. Consequently, there is rapidly growing demand for compact power supply ICs with high power conversion efficiency that can operate effectively in limited space. Conventional power supply ICs (voltage regulators) tend to have low conversion efficiency and large thermal losses, resulting in challenges such as higher power consumption, excessive heat generation, and the need for larger package sizes. Furthermore, sequence control functions during power-up and control methods that can maintain stable output even under conditions with minimal input–output voltage difference are increasingly required.

To address these needs, Torex developed the XC9704/XC9705 series of high-performance power supply ICs designed to achieve improved power conversion efficiency. The XC9704/XC9705 series are high-performance, low-power consumption synchronous step-down DC/DC converters that combine High Voltage capability of 36V with a space-saving design.

Traditionally, for applications requiring up to 36V input and 600mA output, low dropout regulators (LDOs) have been commonly used. LDOs are power supply ICs that stabilize output voltage by adjusting the driver’s on-resistance according to output current. Due to their simple control and low cost, they have been widely adopted in many electronic devices. However, under conditions with a large input–output voltage difference, efficiency significantly deteriorates, and heat generation increases as output current rises. As a result, larger packages with lower thermal resistance are needed to suppress heat generation.

In response to these challenges, the XC9704/XC9705 series were developed as DC/DC converters capable of achieving high efficiency even under large input–output voltage difference conditions, while also meeting the miniaturization demands of sensor and communication devices.
