LTO batteries using lithium titanium oxide (LTO) batteries have recently come on the scene and are being widely considered.

Conventional Li-ion / Polymer secondary batteries have complex charging control making them difficult to handle, so a careful study must be made of their reliability and protective circuits.

LTO batteries are a new type of secondary battery that are very safe and have many advantages, such as simple and quick charging using LDO and simple over-discharging protection using a RESET IC.

LTO battery features

  • Constant voltage charging using LDO is possible.
A dedicated and expensive CC/CV/charging completion control IC is not necessary.
  • Highly reliable and safe. Long-lasting and good at withstanding repeated charging.
  • Resistant to over-discharging. Simple voltage drop detection is sufficient.
  • Voltage is constant between 2.1 – 2.4V.
Energy is easier to draw out than with Supercap (EDLC).

Small charging/voltage monitoring circuits can be easily configured using any manufacturer’s LTO battery and an LDO and RESET IC.

Example LTO battery reference circuit

LDO for LTO battery charging: XC6240, XC6242

  • Max. 2.70V charging voltage, including the temperature range, to match the LTO battery specifications.
  • Designed to reduce discharge current from the battery.
  • Supports LTO batteries that support high-temperature operation (XC6242: 105℃)
  • h = 0.33 low-profile package that can also support thin-package solutions.

Battery voltage monitor: XC6140, XC6142

  • Optimum detect voltage for over-discharge protection of LTO batteries.
  • Release voltage is released when charging starts.
  • Broad hysteresis range that can output a stable signal even when using LTO batteries with a high internal impedance.
  • Ultra-low power-consuming current that keeps down the discharge current from the battery.
  • Supports LTO batteries that support high-temperature operation (XC6142: 105℃).
  • h = 0.33 low-profile package that can also support thin-package solutions.
