It is difficult to calculate the maximum output current of step-up DC/DC converter or inverter DC/DC converter, or it takes time for simulation in a general method (hand calculation or general simulation).

Here explains a method for easily obtaining the maximum output current of step-up DC/DC converter or inverter DC/DC converter using this tool. It is also possible to obtain the maximum output current of step-down DC/DC converter in the same way.

1. Execution of simulation (select the IC / input the power supply specifications)

Input the simulation conditions for input items and execute simulation.

Step 1. Select a product
Step 2. Select oscillation frequency
Step 3. Select an operation mode
Step 4. Input the power supply specifications (Vin / Vout / Iout / peripheral component values etc.)

2. Calculation of maximum output current

It is possible to confirm the maximum output current from "Summary" tab.

Here, let's confirm the maximum output current of PWM/PFM control type step-up DC/DC converter XC9142 series 1.2 MHz as a concrete example.
Check "Iout max" in "Summary" tab. You can see that the maximum output current is 660mA when Vin = 3.3V / Vout = 5.0V. It is possible to calculate the maximum output current that cannot be easily calculated without complicated setting in this way.

CAUTIONS: Notes on the maximum output current calculated with actual machine and this tool

The maximum output current calculated by this tool is calculated based on TYP characteristics of IC.
That is to say, it is the maximum output current taking no account of manufacture irregularity of IC.

The maximum output current of step-up DC/DC converter or inverter DC/DC converter is frequently restricted by current limit characteristics of IC or maximum duty limit, etc. That is to say, if the characteristics of IC fluctuate toward smaller side of current limit or maximum duty, only the output current smaller than the maximum output current calculated through simulation or the maximum output current measured with the actual machine can flowed.

This problem may cause a defect at mass production. Consequently, calculation of maximum output current and equipment design assuming manufacture irregularity of IC, etc. are important.
This tool can calculate only the maximum output current based on TYP characteristics, however, if you contact TOREX separately, we can advance the maximum output current under the worst conditions.
